Q1: Congratulations on Fidelis Law being named one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top Personal Injury Boutiques for 2025. What does this recognition mean to you and your team?

A:
Thank you so much. We’re truly grateful for this recognition. It’s encouraging to know that how we approach our work is resonating—not just with clients, but also with others in the legal community.

We’re a relatively small firm, with nine lawyers across offices in Moncton and Edmundston. So being named among the top personal injury firms in the country feels a bit like we’re punching above our weight.

But honestly, that’s familiar territory for us. Representing plaintiffs against well-resourced insurance companies and being the underdog is where we do some of our best work.

This recognition reaffirms that we’re on the right track—staying focused on people, not file numbers; on doing things properly, not just quickly. We treat clients with respect and show up when it counts. That’s what we’ve always believed in, and that’s what we’ll continue to stay true to.

Q2: What’s the story behind choosing the name “Fidelis” for your firm?

A:
We spent a lot of time thinking about the kind of name we wanted. “Fidelis” stood out because it actually means something—loyalty to our clients and their families, and to the idea that the legal profession should be a force for good, especially in advocating for people who are injured or disabled.

The name holds us to a standard. It reminds us daily of our purpose—to stand by our clients and to honor the trust they place in us. It wasn’t just a branding exercise. If it were, we probably would’ve chosen a name that was easier to pronounce. But for us, it’s about setting a tone and staying focused on what really matters.

Q3: Fidelis Law is not a “settlement mill.” How does that philosophy shape your practice?

A:
We’ve always been intentional about how we practice. We’re not a volume-based firm. We don’t take every file that comes through the door, and we don’t rush cases just to get a quick result.

Our first objective is to ensure that clients get the treatment and care they need to support their recovery. For most people we work with, no amount of money can truly make up for what they’ve lost. Helping them get back on their feet physically and emotionally has a far bigger impact than the size of the settlement.

We only begin talking about resolution once we fully understand how the injuries have affected their life and their family. When it’s time to settle—or litigate, if needed—we take every necessary step to ensure they receive the full financial compensation they deserve. That process takes time, but we believe it’s the right way to do this work. It’s the kind of representation we’d want for ourselves and our own families.

Q4: How would you describe the legal market for personal injury on Canada’s East Coast?

A:
It’s definitely a smaller market, but that brings a strong sense of community. People know each other—lawyers know each other—and reputation really matters.

We’re not just representing clients; we’re representing people we often know personally. Our lawyers come from communities across the province, and many still live in the places they grew up. We’re representing our families, friends, and neighbors, and that adds a deep layer of accountability and purpose to what we do.

It’s a market where trust is earned one client at a time. If you fight hard, treat people fairly, and stand up for what’s right, people notice—and that trust builds over time. That’s something we’ve worked hard to earn.

Q5: Your firm is active in the community. Can you share a few examples?

A:
Community engagement has been built into the fabric of Fidelis from the very start. We were intentional in building a team that shares our values around community leadership and service. It’s not something we’ve had to push—it’s just who we are.

We aim to make a meaningful impact through time, resources, and partnerships. That might not always show up in marketing, because the things we do aren’t about recognition. It’s about caring deeply about where we live and helping however we can. The instinct to help people through hard times in our legal work carries into everyday life. That’s just part of our culture.

Q6: Why is community connection such a core value for you personally?

A:
For me, it comes from personal experience. When I was young, my family lost our home to a fire just before Christmas. It was our community that rallied around us—offering shelter, financial support, and emotional strength.

Later, I saw my father’s community step up again when he was injured at work and needed treatment that wasn’t covered. That kind of support makes a lasting impact.

When you’ve experienced that kind of generosity and seen the people you love benefit from it, and then find yourself in a position to give back, it becomes part of who you are. It’s not just a nice thing to do—it’s a responsibility.

Q7: You’ve held leadership roles in the legal community. Why is giving back to the profession important to you?

A:
Giving back to the profession has always been a priority for us. It’s how we help shape the next generation of lawyers. We’ve learned a lot through practice—about advocacy, ethics, and empathy—and it’s meaningful to share that.

It also makes us more patient and thoughtful communicators with our clients. There’s real value in stepping back from the day-to-day and contributing to the bigger picture of the profession.

Q8: What are your goals for Fidelis Law as you look ahead?

A:
Looking ahead, we want to keep doing good work and build a team that shares our values. Growth is part of the plan, but it has to be thoughtful and sustainable.

We’re not trying to be the biggest firm—we’re focused on being the most trusted. That means investing in our people, evolving how we deliver legal services, and staying true to the principles we started with: never losing sight of the people behind the files, fighting to protect their rights, and securing the care and compensation they deserve.

Ultimately, we want to build a firm where clients feel supported, and where lawyers want to stay, grow, and contribute meaningfully to our profession and our communities.
