When we think of a “Slip & Fall” accident we often think of someone falling on ice or on a slippery floor, but it actually covers a whole category of accidents. For example, it could be that something fell on you (like ice falling off a roof) or that there wasn’t enough light in a room or hallway.

Documentation

Slip & fall accidents vary a lot from one to the next – the most important factor in making a successful claim is documenting where and how the accident happened. Thankfully this is easier than ever now that most of us always have a camera phone in our pocket. If you can, take pictures of:
  • Whatever you fell on, up close: a puddle, an object sticking out of the ground, etc.
  • The wider area, to give perspective: Show where the accident happened. Was it in a hallway? A narrow staircase? The middle of a parking lot?

See a doctor

If you need emergency care, go the hospital.  If not, it’s best to go to your family doctor.  Explain all of your injuries. If your doctor places you off work or prescribes treatments or medication, it’s for your own health, so be sure to follow the advice they give you.

Keep your medical receipts! Depending on the insurance claims available to you, you may be reimbursed for expenses you incur as a result of your injuries, like snow removal or housekeeping services.  Be sure to keep all of your receipts to track what you have paid for out of pocket.

Open an EI claim

Open insurance claims

There are potentially several different insurers that you could open a claim with, depending on where and how your injury happened. It’s possible to have more than one claim at a time.

If you have short-term disability or private health insurance (often through your employer), you should open claims with them.

If your injury happened several months ago (usually between 60 and 120 days) and you have long-term disability insurance, open a claim with them as well.

You may be able to sue if the accident happened on someone’s property (like a house or an office building).
