Family law disputes can be very difficult, both financially and emotionally. Parties often need to resolve pressing issues quickly, such as custody and access to their children, child support, spousal support and property division.

Our team offers compassionate, knowledgeable services to help our clients overcome those burdens. Our lawyers understand the benefits of avoiding costly litigation and focus on offering settlement-oriented legal services. When litigation is unavoidable, our team has extensive courtroom experience and will diligently protect your interests and rights.

In order to provide our clients with the greatest value and avoid unpredictable billable hours, our firm offers three bundled Family Law Litigation services:

Mediation can help save money, time and emotional expense. Our Flat Fee Mediation Services allow you to tailor your settlement discussions to your specific needs and to maintain control over outcomes. Our dedicated team of lawyers and paralegals will guide you through the terms of your separation or divorce.

If you prefer to handle settlement discussions on your own but still want some guidance from a lawyer, our firm can provide you with the knowledge, tools and skills necessary with our Limited-Scope Retainers. Services include:

  • Providing legal advice before or during settlement discussions
  • Assistance with preparing and reviewing adequate disclosure
  • Assistance with preparing and reviewing settlement proposals
  • Providing independent legal advice on the terms of a settlement agreement
  • Drafting Separation Agreements or Consent Orders following settlement
  • Assistance with filing for Divorce

If you wish to proceed through the legal system, we also offer:

  • Guidance through the various legal proceedings
  • Legal advice and analysis
  • Assistance with drafting or reviewing court documents
  • Representation at hearings or trials

Collaborative Law offers parties an opportunity to avoid litigation through settlement discussions, all the while benefiting from the assistance of their respective lawyer. The collaborative process requires that both parties sign an agreement that disqualifies their respective lawyer from representing them in any future family-related litigation. This allows parties and their respective lawyer to concentrate their efforts to a mutually beneficial settlement.

Family Law Mediation

In order to provide our clients with the greatest value and avoid unpredictable billable hours, our firm offers a choice of two service bundles:

Our Flat-Fee Mediation option is specifically designed for simpler separations where there are no significant disagreements about child custody and visitation, minimal assets and no business interests to be divided. The package includes:

  • Lawyer and staff time responding to telephone calls, e-mails and questions from the parties relating to procedural issues
  • All preparation time prior to each mediation session
  • Preparation of the Separation Agreement

Optional: Our team can prepare a Joint Petition for Divorce for an additional fee of $750.00 plus HST (billed to both parties). Additional filing fees with the Court are not included.

$2,500.00 plus HST
Our Upgraded Flat-Fee Mediation option is specifically designed for parties who will require supplemental guidance with child custody and visitation, property division (including business assets), and child and spousal support. The package includes:

  • Initial meetings with each party to the mediation in order to obtain preliminary information (disclosure) and to determine each party’s initial positions (up to 3 hours per party)
  • Up to eight hours of mediation time with one of our lawyers
  • Lawyer and staff time responding to telephone calls, e-mails and questions from the parties relating to procedural issues
  • All preparation time prior to each mediation session
  • Preparation of the Separation Agreement

An important note about deadlines

There are several deadlines that affect motor vehicle insurance claims (and that also apply to pedestrian and cyclist claims). For example, you have two years after the date of the accident to file a lawsuit against the other person. When it comes to no-fault loss of income benefits you have to miss at least 7 work days out of the 30 days following the accident, or be on reduced duty, to potentially qualify.

Do I really need a lawyer?

Hiring a lawyer to represent you is completely optional. You can choose to handle your insurance claim alone if you want to.

Some people choose to do it themselves to save on legal fees, but we believe that in those cases the outcome will be worse than if they had hired a lawyer to represent them. The insurance company has a whole team of adjusters and lawyers on their side with years of experience in making sure insurance payouts – including yours – are as small as possible. A lawyer with experience in insurance claims, on the other hand, will fight for you to make sure you get the full compensation you deserve.
